Thankyou for posting these great pictures. I lived in Chelmsford until I moved to California in 1974. My parents were both in the R.A.F during WW II and were stationed at various locations ,however not at Boreham. A friend and myself used to sneak onto the property in the 60s to fish the lakes. My mother was employed by a gentleman who tried his hand at motor racing in his XK120 at Boreham while it was in use as a racecourse. I never did get to see the track or runways but heard lots of stories about the wartime and the later racing exploits of the daredevils who used no safety equipment which is so standard today. I found this site as I am researching the famous Scottish racing team ecurie ecosse and have purchased memorabilia relating to Boreham and other airfields around England and Scotland. Usually when in Chelmsford I try to find another old wartime airfield to visit even though there may be nothing left just being there to honor the men and women who gave us our freedom is a great feeling. Thanks and best regards David.

In answer to your query about the bathrooms in Blickling Hall, near RAF Oulton----According to former 214(FMS) (BS) Squadron pilot ,Murray Peden,in his excellent book "A Thousand Shall Fall " ( "Bomber " Harris's favourite book !), the members of RAF Oulton Officers Mess, which was in the grounds of Blickling Hall, were offered the use of the Hall's bathrooms, which were on the top floor, and only had cold water ( very bracing,it seems, but then men were men in those days !).

I have recently been researching the wartime endeavours of A/S/Ldr Ralph Van Den Bok, DFC**, as part of whose crew my father,F/O John Mills flew on Operations with No.214 squadron ( B17 F & G ) in 1944-45. It is good to find S/Ldr Van Den Bok's name here on this board !!He was, earlier in WW 2, a Wireless Op / Air Gunner with no. 408 (Goose) squadron, flying in H-P Hampdens.Promoted to Flight Lt.,and made squadron Gunnery Leader,he was awarded the DFC in August 1942.Soon afterwards,he was shot down over enemy territory,by night-fighter "Ace", Wilhelm Herget. He evaded capture, returned to England, and was awarded a 2nd DFC.Then he vanishes from the scene for some time,re-training as a pilot( I assume ), and joins 214 squadron towards the end of 1944.After flying 17 "Ops" in Boeing "Flying Fortress" A/c, he was awarded a 3rd DFC in 1945.My father never once,in all his life, mentioned him !!!

Can the origin of this panel be confirmed? I believe it was either presented to RAF Coltishall by Sir Winston Churchill, or was returned from Canada and presented to RAF Coltishall by Selincourt Ltd on 19th July 1973. In any event it is a fine example of the panels.

If these remains were situated between No's 2 and 3 Hangars, they are the remains of what was originally the Station armoury. Immediately after WWII this armoury was converted into a secure research facility, - a very highly classified laboratory in which research and development of radar and comm's countermeasures was carried out. Another armoury was being built elsewhere on the technical site.

Hi Richard, visited this site in 2007 and looking at the weather and surroundings it was close to that time when you yourself had been there. My interest lies in the fact that my mother started her service here in the WAAF. I snapped quite afew pics of the station and village with information given by my mother and local people as to what various biuldings were used for. The last time I visited was back in about 1964-65 when I remember finding a small brick built hut crammed full of theatricle gear including a very accurately made BBC camera! Not quite the bit of Mossie I was hoping for!

A poinent moment for me; accidentally coming across this picture of a memorial. Pilot Officer Waroczewski had only been back in service for a few weeks when he was killed. He had been badly injured in a training accident in December 1940. His plane was out of fuel and destined to come down and he had selected an emergeny landing ground and was making his approach. At the last moment he saw a farmhouse, a very large one, and took sharp evasive action which caused him to hit trees on slightly higher ground. His nerve and courage resulted in one destroyed Wellington but saved the lives of his crew and a significant number of farm workers who were eating in the farm buildings. It also preserved the farmhouse which was, and is, a beautiful listed building. This was just outside my home village.

We came across the memorial in the form of a wooden cross with brass plaque just inside a cornfield about 100 yards up the lane alongside what we assumed was the old airfield. It looked well cared for. We were not looking for the memorial but pulled into the field entrance to turn round and spotted it.

I worked at RAE Farnborough as an Air Traffic Controller. "N1" building was the old ATC tower (N2 was the small annexe next door). Funny to see the old sign again after all these years. I must have walked past it 1000's of times. On my first day there I saw N1 next to the door. Unfamiliar with RAE naming conventions, I assumed that someone had put the sign upside down.... and it should have read "IN" !!! (look at the sign and you'll see what I mean) Oh dear.....

Hi, just just found your website, I must congratulate you on a great piece of work, I was born in 1946 and we lived in the nissen huts dotted around the Ellough airfield, in the early 50s we used the airfield (or as we called it the drome) as a playground, I vividly remember the control tower, at that time it was in good condition with all the doors and windows in place and the steel steps that led up to the roof, just beside the building was a steel flagpole on a pivot which I assume was for the windsock, your pics of the slit trench bomb shelters also bring back memories, about 50 yds further from these was 2 sunken covered shelters with steps going down into them, but these were always filled with water, there were rumours that the slit trenches and the sunken shelters were linked by a tunnel but we never found it, I still live close to the airfield in fact my front bedroom window looks onto the field where the nissen huts used to be that we lived in, once again a great site and keep up the good work

I was stationed at Rivenhall from September, 1944 until January of 1946, and find your photographs so very interesting. I was an Engine Fitter and worked on the Stirlings of 295 squadron. As the war finished I was flown to Norway, (Gardermoen) to service incoming aircraft ,I was one of the first 20 troops in Norway. I then went to Stavanger, where an aircraft had run off the runway, after that I came back. It may interest you to know that my father Thomas Storey was also at Rivenhall with me and slept in the next bed !! There is a bit on the internet about that if you care to look it up. Best wishes Frank Storey

I was born in 1926 in a 2 storey house situated on the Castle Camps to Helions Bumpstead Road , just outside of the C/C's Village, and very close to the junction point of 3 Shire Counties i.e Cambridge , Essex and Suffolk Shire We left the district for west London circa 1930 and he house no longer exists. However the house was located almost directly in line of sight with one of the main runways, and during a recent visit to C/C's was told that it's 2 storey presence became obviously a danger to air traffic when it was clipped by a plane , causing a crash. The house was then quickly demolished , and was still just a pile of rubble when I visited, ( from Australia ) the very spot in 1974. Albeit I did not discover it's wartime history then. I visited again in 2007, without gaining any further knowledge of it's history. However, during my most recent visit in 2008, I finally learned of it's fate. My first reaction was one of hurt, that someone had destroyed a bit of my life...but then I considered that it had been done for all the best reasons imaginable. Despite scouring the approximate site where the house had stood, ( it s now just cultivated farmland ) and despite the use of Google Satellite photography, I could find no trace of the house whatsoever. That does not take away the nostalgic pleasure I get from viewing any pictures such as this. ..... With the best of Regards.... R. D. Jones ( Ronjay) PS. Fittingly, tomorrow is Anzac Day here in Australia, the Parade of which I will be a participant (or at least in the motorcade portion of it these days ! )

Hi Simon, it is far too small for a dispersal, it is also joined to the main runway. From looking at the location of it, map and site plan it is definately not a dispersal, the only other thing it could be is the hard standing for the runway controllers caravan standing.

I visited RAF Neatishead as a cadet of the Air Training Corps, whilst we were staying at RAF Coltishall on summer camp in 1992. It is something i remember very vividly, as it was an active base at the time and the ops room was awesome, buzzing with RAF personnel going about their business and all the radar screens and lights changing, was like being in the middle of a movie set and i'm sure i have a memory where we were all told (or even had to sign something) not to talk about the base to other people, as it played a big part in our countries defence against invaders. I don't think as a cadet, i quite realised the significance of what the base actually stood for, but i feel quite privileged that i got to see the base in full operational order! I'll definitely be bringing my son along for a visit when i am next in Norfolk, now i know it is a museum!

I have just read Murray Peden's book,"A Thousand Shall Fall", in which he tells of how the Officers' Mess at Oulton was built on a site not far from Blickling Hall, and the Officers were allowed to walk in the grounds of the Hall, and, indeed,to use the bathrooms on the top floor of the Hall, although there was no hot water, apparently ! My father ,F/O John Tudor Mills,RAFVR, never mentioned this,or anything else about RAF Oulton, or no.214 squadron, with whom he flew from Oulton in 1944-45 ( S/Ldr R Van Den Bok's crew)

I have been a Volunteer in the Museum at Blickling Hall for 7 years. Regarding the Bathroom the story goes that the Officers were allowed a weekly bath in the Hall but reported that the water was colder than the North Sea!

I have just found your site and what memories it brings back to me. I was stationed at RAF Wyton from 1958 to 1961 with 58 Squadron. I was a Junior Technician - Aero Engines and worked on Canberra PR 8's and the new PR9's. I would most certainly have serviced the Canberra PR9 displayed on the Memorial Plaque. I left Wyton in late 1961 (December) and went to Bomber Command Strategic Missile School at RAF Feltwell and then as Cpl Technician - Propulsion Systems was involved in the Thor Missile System, at RAF Driffield.

Great photographs. My dad was the radio operator on O'Sullivan's Crew 713, from the 857th Bomb Squadron of the 492nd Bomb Group. The first crew to successfully complete a 30 mission combat tour from the ill-fated and tragic 492nd. Their last flight was on July 31, 1944. They were some happy guys, let me tell you!! I'm currently in production on a documentary film about this crew and the 492nd Bomb Group. The film is entitled "Crew 713" the web address is www.crew713.com Best wishes, Alejandro "Alex" Mena Shanty Films Dallas, TX USA

I was here at Watton the week it closed,or at least was handed over to the Army,in 1970 or 71, ; I forget which ! A small group of us had driven up from HMS Daedalus at Lee-on-Solent to do a familiarisation course on the Canberras of 360 (ECM) Squadron, a joint RAF / FAA outfit. The station was horrendously busy that week : there being no spare accomodation available,we were billeted in the Main Gate Guardroom for the duration of our stay !!

Hello Richard. What a wonderful web site you have produced. Must have taken you years and hundreds of miles travelling to visit all the sites that you have completed. Regards the picture of the control tower at Rufforth, I visited the control tower for several years in my capacity as a civilian radar and radio technicain when the airfield was in use as a R.L.G for RAF Linton on Ouse, when I also flew from there in Piston Provosts in the mid 1960\'s.

Good to see this particularly the Control Tower. I was RAF National Service at Rufforth 1957-59 Part time Air Traffic Control Electical Mechanic. It brought back memories. I also visited many of the Airfilds inYorkshire and Linclonshire on my Velocette motorcycle paid 1 1/2d per mile as I serviced the Link trainers part time. Seeing so many airfields has enabled me to renew my memories over 15 years of retirement using our caravan as a base I am presently writing a history of Scorton as for 30 years I lived in Richmond and My son lived with his family at Scorton. Unfortunately although happily my wife and I are now in Shropshire at the home of our daughter/son in law due to illness I hope that you can keep up and extend your good work a historical 'document' which must give pleasure to many, Thanks Colin Stegeman

As an ex Halton apprentice I googled that and your site came up with the photo of the apprentice memorial at Halton. I looked at a lot of the other photos and found them fascinating. I grew up in Reading during the war and used to cycle out to the airfields within a reasonable distance of home to look at the planes. I became an apprentice in Jan 1948. After I left the RAF I went out with a girl whose father owned a bakery near Newbury and had the contract to supply Greenham Common with bread, I went to the base many times delivering bread. I live in Australia now and it is through sites such as yours that I can have a nostalgia trip. Keep up the good work.

Its good to see the memory of RAF High Ercall is being logged. I have passed and flown over it many times. I have also seen a photo of the airfield after world war 2 full of aircraft for disposal. Aircraft were flown straight from the manufactures for disposal not wanted. Its a very sad sight to see. I never saw the airfield at that time but I remember actually seeing RAF Litchfield (Fradley )also being used for aircraft disposals.

Hello Richard Flagg. If it will add anything to memories of war-time Clyffe Pypard I would say that I was there when it was known as 29 EFTS. We were on a grading course to sort out whether we were suitable to continue pilot training. We were supposed to do 12 hours flying on Tiger Moths to solo standard. I did 4hrs25mins. and then it snowed, very heavily, and we were cut off for several days. The last entry in my log book was on the 12th Jan.. We were eventually dug out but didn't fly again before the three weeks allocated was up and we returned to ACRC St. John's Wood, London. Not very satisfactory but, as far as I recall, we all passed! Only a snippet but it may help with the jigsaw. Best wishes, Richard Swale

This looks like Phase row. This building was used by the Paint Shop (Corrosion Control) for component blasting, stripping and painting. On the extreme other end was the other half of this operation, the aircraft paint hanger.

The plane may actually have been a Halifax and I have heard of a memorial to the crew. Can,t find a crash site for the plane however

Thes hangars and workshops on the old Portsmouth Airfield perimeter road are or were the Airspeed Aviation hangars and subsequently De-Havillands. DH closed down circa 1962 and moved to Hatfield. Some of the workshops were taken over for aviation related work such as Firproof Tanks Ltd. Portsmouth Airfield is now a huge housing estate!

Hi The headstone nearest the camers with the upturned vase is that of my granfather: Wing Commander William Hudson Maguire, known as Bill. He flew with 85 squadron on night fighter missions, Hunsdon, West Malling then in \'45 after his ops sessions had been completed, he moved to the FIU based at Ford. Apparrently he was involved in a number of meetings with Winston Churchill - but I need to verify this. Bill is featured in many books covering night fighters, mosquitos etc.. He was killed testing an altimeter in a mosquito, flying from Ford. He crashed in Chaucer Ave, Rustington killing himself and his navigator. There were a number of civillian casualties. Cheers Simon

Hi there, I was behind the erection of this memorial. It was rected in August 1993 using a 1941 GMC 6x6 with a No 7 set crane in the back and was unveiled on May 28th 1994 in the presence of four now deceased 437th veterans including sole survivor of the crash Lee Gillette. Flypasts were perfomed on the day by C130, C141, C47 and L4. The stone is now in need of a repaint and I am currently exploring my 'options' to get this done. There is also a Role of Honour for the 437th TCG in Ramsbury Church, erected in 2000 by myself. Both of these projects were co funded by the 437th TCG Association. I understand the army have demolished all the airfield architechture from WW2 before a preservation order was put on the Art Deco style control tower. Richard, That red \'device\' is part of an analogue fire / disaster semaphoring system. They were abundant around the northern Tech site until the JCBs got their way in 1997! Not certain how they worked but there was one in the AMWD / Water tower compound by the Generator / pump house which certainly had a telephone cable pairing that disappeared into the workings of a ancient Parmeko Tanoy type system Cheers Ian J

These buildings were once used by the Weapons Loading, Weapons Release and Gun Shops. In the early 1970's all three shops were moved to new buildings on or near the flightline and these buildings were used to store weapons release equipment.

In 1983 these huts were the Sergeants Mess accomodation blocks until the newer accomodation block (seen in the background of this photo) was built. I believe these buildings were then used as "Transit" accomodation up until recent times. These buildings and many others like them on St Mawgan are visible on some of the very earliest photo's of the airfield.

Never knew it as a working field - only ever as an Antiques Dealer standing there at fairs, but I walked my dog over every inch of what was left and always got that shiver down the spine..... Standing on the concrete circles with the \'plane tie-down rings still set in the centre, walking the runways, lights and marking still there. So much tragedy as planes came home with dead crew, or didn\'t come home at all. So much laughter as carefree aircrew passed the time waiting for the next mission. A truly magical place. Now it seems the site is to be reduced even further - to a gravel pit or a housing estate. So sad. I will never stand there again and, as we drove off the site on Wednesday 5th August 2009 I am not ashamed to say there was a lump in my throat and a tear in my eye. That such an honourable memory should be allowed to just slip away seems so, so sad. Thanks for all the photos - at least it will live on there.....

The portion that sticks out is where the weather observer recorded their observations, it gave views to either end of the runway. The entire 2nd floor housed the weather station and the flat decks were primarily used to observe the weather outdoors. I would love to see some interior shots of this building.
